Hallo!

Willkommen to the first entry on mein blog! As you could probably guess, my name is Anthony Gobbo, and I am a 19-year-old male in the college of LSA. I am likely to major in biochemistry, and intend to become a doktor (likely an ophthalmologist) in the future. I have found the transition into this semester to be more hectic than last year- largely in part due a much heavier course load, but on the bright side, German is working a different area of the brain than the usual math-and-science dominance I work with.

I am very interested in German culture and even more interested in learning the language. I have friends who live in Germany, or countries adjacent to Germany that still speak German (like the Belgium border), and I always feel bad that they have to switch to English for the ignorant Amerikaner (me). So in part, i'm seeking to return the favor they have offered me. I've found German class to be fun so far, if completely out of my realm of expertise- but that is a good thing, it means I can grow and develop more! I spent most of last night whenever i'd be walking between classes or doing errands working on my pronunciation- pronunciation often is a problem for me, and I can butcher words in English occasionally as well. This is especially compounded by me having spent 4 years learning Japanese in the past- I've never had to roll an r in my life. (The Japanese have a r-l sound, which blends r and l together, and it makes rolling an r out more difficult for me... but i'm making progress!)

Along the topic of class, I can't say I was terribly surprised upon reading the 50 page article assigned for reading before this blog- my family does have some German ancestry a few generations up the line (though more Polish ancestry than practically anything else), and most people I know of have at least heard of Frankenmuth, Michigan, so with memories of having visited Frankenmuth several times before in mind, I could remember and correlate with the article nicely.

I was not entirely sure what else to talk about, but then I decided I could at least touch upon music. I love to listen to a wide variety of various types of music (everything between Japanese death metal to Christian a Capella , and a German friend of mine introduced me to an awesome band that does songs in both English and German- Lil Rain.
