GERMINGLISH

For this AMD, I decided to do one of the suggested activities, which was to read the wikipedia page on Denglish. Denglish/Denglisch describes the recent influx of English vocabulary into German speech. Although there are a lot of words in German that bear similarity to English, Denglish is the use of purely original English words into German. For example, a lot of Denglish appears in technology related things such as, "booten" (to reboot) and "gecrasht" (crashed). I also found it really interested that they change up these words to make them sound more German, instead of simply using "boot" or "crash."

I also thought that it was interesting that Denglisch is used quite heavily in advertising, where most of the tag lines are now in English. Besides the previously mentioned technology-related terms, Denglisch appears in the field of personal hygiene:

Double Action Waschegel
Oil Control Gel Creme
Oil Control Waschgel

Perhaps it's because the English-speaking population is greater than the German-speaking population, and the companies are simply trying to expand their target audience.

It's funny because I've been to a lot of asian countries, and English has also snuck its way into everyday use. I wasn't aware that Germany was experience the same thing! It seems as if English is really the global language...
